Objective: Dispatch all enemy aircraft patrolling the area around An Najaf Intercept Operations Center. Make sure all of the area is completely cleared to allow for easier Coalition ground troop movement. Background: The 82nd Airborne Division and the 101st Airborne Division surrounded Najaf, preparing for a possible door-to-door battle to root out Iraqi freedom fighters. Coalition strategy seems to be to surround the city and avoid bloody firefights. A battle that destroyed some of Najaf's holy places could inflame passions of Shi'ites in Iraq and elsewhere, most notably Iran. -Coalition air operations continue to target the Republican Guard. -800 of the days 2000 sorties were strike sorties against Republican Guard troops. -3,000 bombs were dropped during the past 72 hours. A total of 8,000 have been used during the whole campaign to this point. -The 3rd ID attacked and seized a bridge over the Euphrates River near Al Handiyah. -Air strikes in the North intensified making this the busiest day of the war for attack sorties.
