Objective: Assure the complete destruction of a squadron of Iraqi T-72M1 Soviet made tanks in the vicinity of Karbala Pass. Two A-10A Warthogs will lead the attack on the tanks. Your job is to escort the Warthogs and supply cover for them. Two F16 Falcons will be in the vicinity suppressing enemy air defenses. Background: Karbala Pass is a narrow stretch of land located just west of the Shiite Muslim holy city of Karbala. Coalition forces have been on a sprint run towards Baghdad since the beginning of the now 12 day old war. Of the several routes taken by coalition forces, one of the most important is through Karbala Pass and the Republican Guard forces defending it. Elements of 5th Corps, which is the 3rd Infantry Division and 82nd Airborne Divisions combined, are preparing to take on the Republican Guard's Medina Division. -Coalition air operations continue to target the Republican Guard. -800 of the days 2000 sorties were strike sorties against Republican Guard troops. -3,000 bombs were dropped during the past 72 hours. A total of 8,000 have been used during the whole campaign to this point. -The 3rd ID attacked and seized a bridge over the Euphrates River near Al Handiyah. -Air strikes in the North intensified making this the busiest day of the war for attack sorties.
